GREATER ACCRA REGION
(GAR)

BACKGROUND

The greater Accra region is the smallest region in terms of landmass covering a total surface are of km.sq.  The region is centrally located within the coastal belt of Ghana share boundaries with the Eastern Region to the North, Central region to the West and Volta Region to the East.  To the south of the region lies the Gulf of Guinea which span  km coastline stretching from Langma near Kasoa in the  West to Ada in the East.
The Greater Accra Region has a total counted Population of, and with a growth rate 4.4 o% which is the highest in the country.  The region remains predominantly urban (87.7%) which is about twice the national average of 43.4% it yields a density of 640 persons per km.sq. which is much higher than the national density of 79 there is therefore enormous pressure on land or what the land can generate.
The region is divided into 10 Assemblies namely the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.  Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Ga West Assembly, Ga East Municipal Assembly, Ga South Municipal Assembly, Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Ldzokuku-Krowoh Municipal Assembly, Dangbe East district Assembly and Dangbe West Assembly.
The main agricultural activities in the region are livestock/Poultry Production, Fishing, maize, cassava, vegetables notably pepper, Okro, garden eggs, cabbage, tomatoes, Asian vegetables and fruits and tree crops such as, pineapple, water melon pawpaw and mango.
As the hub of economic activities in the whole Ghana, the Greater Accra Region has witnessed one of the drastic increases in population with an average population density form 315 people per square kilometer in 1984 to 640 people per square kilometer in 2000 and 723 in 2007.  This significant increase has resulted in great pressure on land and other natural resources in the region.

LAND USE, VEGETATION, SOILS AND CLIMATE

The region has large scale commercial agricultural enterprises in horticultural crops, vegetable, fisheries and poultry sectors.  The presence of large water bodies (Densu and Volta) has contributed to the development of large scale irrigation schemes (3599ha).  These schemes comprise the Dawhenya and Kpong irrigation schemes for rice and vegetable production, and Weija Irrigation scheme for vegetables and the Torko Irrigation Scheme for rice production .
The spate of encroachment on agricultural lands by estate developers, has given the regional management the cause to consider and adopt peri-urban agriculture (rabittary, grasscutter production, snail farming, livestock production etc.) lately.  This system of agriculture makes use of little land.
The Greater Accra Region has a very big potential for cattle rearing due to the large fields of grassland on the Accra plains.
