Position title:   Director, Agricultural Extension Services

Immediate Superior:  Chief Director

Immediate subordinates:

Objectives of the position

1. To initiate and formulate relevant policies/programs for an efficient and effective agricultural extension delivery in Ghana
2. To give technical backstopping to the regions and districts
3. To co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate extension programs in collaboration with the directorate of PBCM&E.
4. To advise the Chief Director on all matters relating to agricultural extension.

Field Services

1. Formulate policies/plans and strategies for efficient and sustainable extension delivery;
2. Liaise with relevant agencies to ensure that agricultural technologies being disseminated are environmentally sound;
3. Create and maintain a linkage between research, extension and farmers in collaboration with CSIR, the Universities Research Extension Linkages Committees (RELCs), NGOs and the National and Regional Directors of MOFA;
4. Monitor and provide Technical  Backstopping to Extension planning at the regional and district levels;
5. Conduct research and suggest ways for the improvement of the agricultural extension delivery system for the acceleration of the rate of diffusion of agricultural technology in collaboration with the relevant directorates of MOFA;
6. Collate and prepare reports on agricultural extension;
7. Promote the participation of private sector in extension delivery and funding;
8. Liaise with the Department of Cooperatives to ensure the development and strengthening of Farmer Based Organizations (FBOs)

Training, Information and Communication

1. Promote the development and production of communication media in collaboration with relevant institutions;
2. Develop Agricultural Extension Materials;
3. Disseminate agricultural technology through print, radio and television;
4. Provide technical backstopping to the regions and districts in extension material development and production;
5. Link up with research and source and review  available agricultural technology for extension delivery; and
6. Develop and operationalize a technology information storage and retrieval system.

Livelihood and Emerging Issues

• Liaise with relevant Ministries to design and promote youth programs in agriculture;
• Liaise with relevant bodies and Directorates to design programs and extension materials to deal with general rural livelihood issues including poverty reduction through agriculture, rural health (HIV/AIDS); and
• Collaborate with WIAD to ensure the inclusion of gender issues in extension activities in the regions and districts.
