Objectives of the position
- To formulate policies and programs for the development and production of food and industrial crops in the country;
- To ensure the co-ordination monitoring and evaluation of crop production programs and projects in collaboration with directorate of PBCM&E;
- To advise the Chief Director on policy issues and laws related to food and industrial crops;
- Provide technical backstopping to the RELCs to ensure that appropriate on-farm trials and demonstrations in the crops sub-sector; and
- Collate and prepare bi-annual national reports on agricultural development, with inputs from the regions, outlining key issues affecting the sector and proposed remedial actions to improve performance.
- To ensure that land management issues are effectively addressed within the agricultural sector to achieve sustainable productivity.

Responsibilities
- Formulate national policies for the development of food and horticulture and industrial crops;
- Ensure the timely preparation and consolidation of development programs;
- Source new technologies for crops (food, horticulture and industrial) development and promotion in collaboration with research institutions.
- To facilitate input acquisition and distribution;
- Collaborate with the Directorates of WIAD, Agricultural Engineering Services and PPRSD in facilitating the production, post-harvest management and processing in the crops sub-sector; and
- Develop plans and programs for the promotion of the development and production of non-traditional export crops in collaboration with relevant institutions;
- Initiate and formulate national policies for the development of plantation crops;
- Facilitate and support region and districts to promote effective soil fertility management activities.
- Promote soil and water conservation and management practices for sustainable agricultural development;
- Encourage and promote organic farming;
- Facilitate/ensure availability of appropriate inputs for crop production; and
- Support research for crop improvement and development.
