GHANA IRRIGATION DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

Your Partner
in All-Year Round
Agriculture

BACKGROUND

The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) was established by the Supreme Military Council Decree 89 (SMCD) of 1977.

The present establishment evolved from the earlier Land Planning Unit of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the early 1960s. The mandate at that time was Soil and Water Conservation.

In 1964, the Unit was upgraded to the status of a Division, the Irrigation Reclamation and Drainage Division (IRRD) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

In 1974 the Division was further transformed into the  Irrigation Department within MOFA.

GIDA has now been given much broader objectives, with a multi-disciplinary irrigation development outlook.

WHY IRRIGATION
UPPER EAST
  • The spatial distribution of rainfall had varied significantly over the past thirty years.
  • More than two-thirds of the country is increasingly experiencing unimodal rainfall patterns. This is resulting in widespread  single cropping seasons and widespread failure of second crops even in ears noted for bimodal rainfall patterns.
  • When the rain does come (often when least expected) most of it is lost as run off.
  • Long term agricultural planning without irrigation component cannot lead to sustainability and increased productivity  consistent with population growth.
  • With irrigation, your crop production does not have to depend on the rainfall pattern to ensure National Food Security and Rural Poverty Alleviation.
