VETERINARY COUNCIL
BACKGROUND

The Veterinary Council of Ghana (VCG) is a body established by Law in 1993 the Veterinary Surgeons Law, (PNDC Law 305C) to regulate Veterinary Practitioners in their profession and to regulate and control the practices performed by the Practitioners with the view to securing the highest standards in the practice of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in Ghana.


To achieve this Council is expected to perform the following functions:-

a)  Prescribe standards of professional conduct and ethics for practitioners;
b)  Uphold and enforce professional standards by disciplinary powers conferred under the Veterinary Surgeons Law;
c)  Maintain and publish a register of practitioners; and
d)  Do all such things as in the opinion of the Council are necessary or desirable for the proper regulation of the practice of veterinary surgery and the improvement of veterinary services of Ghana.

MEMBERS

The Veterinary Council consists of nine members:-
a) Four registered members of the Ghana Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) elected by the GVMA
b) The Director of Veterinary Services Directorate of Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA)
c)  Representative of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) nominated by the Director General of CSIR.
d) A legal practitioner of not less than ten years standing as a lawyer nominated by the government
e) A Veterinary Surgeon from one of the Universities in Ghana; and
f)  A distinguish and recognized livestock farmer appointed by the government

REGISTRAR
 
The Council appoints a registered veterinary surgeon as the Registrar of        veterinary Surgeons and Administrative Secretary to the Council.
The current Registrar is Nana (Dr) Ofosu Akyaw Brempong-a Retired Deputy Director of Veterinary Services. Other members of the administrative team are:

  • Mr. Stephen Lartey         -        Driver Gd.l

 

ACTIVITIES
  • Meetings of the Council: The Council meets at least thrice in a year or at such shorter intervals as the Chairman may decide. The council may co-opt any person to act as adviser at its meeting, however the co-opted person shall not vote on a matter for decision of the Council.

  • Meeting of Veterinarians annually: The Council organizes a general meeting with members of the profession to discuss problems in the system that militate against the practice of Veterinary Medicine. The last of such meetings took place in Kumasi in October 2008 with an elaborate report and recommendations for implementation by the Council
  • Publication of register:The council once in a year publishes the list of registered Veterinarians operating in
    the country
STANDING COMMITTEE
  • Investigations into Complaints

The disciplinary committee receives complaints from the field on unethical practices and other issues that lower standards in the practice of veterinary medicine. Findings of this committee are referred to the Council for appropriate disciplinary measures to be applied.

  • Registration of Veterinary Surgeons
This is an ongoing process that ensures all new Veterinarians are qualified.
